Poker is a card game where you compete against other players for the pot (money that everyone puts into the center of the table) by making the best five-card hand. The person with the best hand wins all the money in the pot. Sometimes a player has a pair of the same cards and they win a smaller amount of the pot. There are also cases where all of the cards have the same suit and this is known as a flush.

The game starts with two mandatory bets called blinds that are put into the pot by the players to the left of the dealer. This is to make sure there is a pot to win and that everyone has an incentive to play.

After the first betting round is complete the dealer deals three additional cards face up on the table. These are community cards that everyone can use. This is known as the flop. There is another round of betting and the player with the highest five-card hand wins the pot.

There are a lot of rules to poker and it can be confusing for new players. It takes time to learn the basics and how to read tells of other players. It is not uncommon for even the most experienced players to lose big pots in the beginning. Just keep playing and working on your strategy. Eventually you will improve.
